Chapter 370

Cheyenne eventually fell into a dreamless sleep, Jon’s heartbeating drone into her mind, his familiar scent lulling her into a relaxed state.

To Jon it felt like hours lying in this half sit position, he nodded off a while later, his head resting on hers.

Something woke him up, looking up he stared into the eyes of a nurse.

“I’m sorry to intrude, but the doctor asked me to let you know about Mr. Ketterson. He is out of surgery and resting comfortably.”

“Thank you, sweetheart.”

She stammered slightly, smiling as she made her way out of the room.

Jon could hear Richie coming down the hallway. He was talking animatedly with one of the babies and let’s be honest his voice could carry.

His dark head appeared around the corner. One baby on his hip and the other in Christie’s.

“Oops, mommy and daddy are snuggling up to each other. Not sure if we wanna see this, do we darlin’?”

Mikayla gave Richie a toothless grin as answer.

Connor’s babytalk woke Cheyenne right up.

“Slowly does it baby.” Jon supported her as she tried to sit her stiff, bruised body upright.

A hush fell over the room as everyone realised the extent of her injuries. Despite her ordeal she had the brightest smile, her arms outstretched towards the babies.

Connor immediately reached out to his mother. Mikayla was unsure of herself and clutched to Richie’s shirt. Cheyenne’s appearance was a bit more frightening to the little girl. Jon stood up and took her from Richie, he didn’t miss the hurt in her eyes when Mikayla pulled back from her.

“Hey, sweet girl. This is still your mommy. She’s just a little bit hurt right now, but she loves you and wants to say hi.”

She stared intently at her dad as if she listened to what he was telling her. Jon sat down next to Cheyenne, comforting the little girl as she watched her mom intently.

“Hey, babygirl. How ya doin’?” Cheyenne talked soothingly to her but
refrained from touching her. She will reach out to her when she’s ready. She was already eyeing her brother jealously, sitting on their mother’s lap, keeping himself busy with his little pudgy hands.

Christie caught her eye.

“Christie. I want to thank you for keeping the babies safe. Without you they would have been in real danger! Thank you!” Cheyenne’s voice was low and emotional.

The woman stepped forward, tears streaming down her face. She took Cheyenne’s hand , squeezing it tightly.

“No need to thank me. I’m just so sorry that I couldn’t do anything more for you. I just want you to know, that I admire your bravery. I will never be able to comprehend what you went through, but you are a courageous lady.”
